What Is a DOT Physical?

A DOT physical exam is a medical evaluation required to ensure commercial drivers are physically and mentally fit to safely operate a commercial vehicle.

Once completed and passed, drivers receive a Medical Examiner’s Certificate (MEC), typically valid for up to 24 months, depending on medical findings.

Who Needs a DOT Physical?

You may need a DOT physical if you:

  • Hold or are applying for a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)

  • Drive a commercial vehicle across state lines

  • Operate vehicles weighing 10,001 lbs or more

  • Transport hazardous materials

  • Drive a vehicle designed to carry 8+ passengers for compensation or 15+ passengers not for compensation

What’s Included in the Exam

Your DOT physical exam may include:

  • Review of medical history

  • Vision and hearing screening

  • Blood pressure and pulse

  • Urinalysis (protein, glucose, hydration — not a drug test)

  • Height, weight, and BMI

  • Cardiovascular, respiratory, neurological, and musculoskeletal exam

  • Review of medications and chronic conditions (if applicable)

All exams are performed by a DOT‑certified medical examiner.

  • Glasses or contacts (if you use them)

  • List of current medications

  • Medical clearance forms if you have certain conditions (diabetes, heart disease, sleep apnea, etc.)
